What StepRank keeps about you, who can see it, how long we keep it, and how to have it changed or removed.
Effective and last updated 22 September 2026
The short version
- The names dancers and judges enter are public on the competition’s pages. Showing who danced and who placed is what StepRank is for.
- We keep only what running a competition needs. No ads and no tracking. We never sell your data or share it for advertising.
- During the beta, results are kept until the beta ends and then deleted.
- To change or remove your name, ask the organizer, or email us.
- Our data is stored in the United States.
Who we are
StepRank is run by StepRank, based in the United States. We decide what the app collects and why, so we are responsible for it under this policy. Write to us at hello@steprank.dance.
An organizer runs each competition. They add or approve dancers and judges, and can change or remove names in their competition.
If you dance
What we collect
The name you type, your bib number, and whether you dance as a lead or a follow. You choose how much of your name to give: a first name and last initial is fine. We need a name and a bib to enter you; without them you cannot register.
Some of it comes from other people. The organizer can add you to the competition by hand, and judges give you marks. From those marks the app works out your scores, callbacks and placing.
Who can see it
Everyone. Your name and bib show in the competition’s dancer list, in the published results with your placing, on a page of your own, and on a result image anyone can share. Search engines are asked not to list your own page. The dancer list and results can appear in search results.
Why, and our legal basis
To run the competition you entered and publish its results. Our legal basis is your consent, which you give when you tick the box as you register. You can withdraw it at any time (see below). That stops your name being shown from then on; it does not undo what was shown before.
Placings are worked out from the judges’ marks by the method the organizer chose. People make the judgements; no decision about you is made by software alone.
Changing or removing your name
Ask the organizer. They can replace your name with an anonymous label and keep your scores, so everyone else’s results stay correct. Or email us at hello@steprank.dance with the competition and your bib number.
If you judge
What we collect
The name you type, the marks you give, and a scrambled copy of your return code. The scrambled copy lets us check your code without being able to read it.
Who can see it
Your name is public in the competition’s list of judges. The organizer sees your marks. Published results can show marks, but never with a judge’s name beside them.
Our legal basis
Your consent, which you give when you tick the box as you sign up, and our legitimate interest in keeping an accurate record of how the competition was scored.
On your device
Your sign-in is saved in this browser tab, and on this device until 24 hours after you last use it, so you can continue without your code. The storage table below lists each item.
If you organize
What we collect
Your email address and display name, the competitions you create with their settings, and your credit balance. When you ask for access, your email and message come to us by email.
Why, and our legal basis
To give you the account you asked for and run your competitions. Our legal basis is our agreement with you: we cannot provide the account without this data.
You agreed to the beta terms when you asked for access: beta data is for testing, it is deleted when the beta ends, and you get notice first so you can export it.
Your account
You stay signed in with a cookie. A device is signed out after 24 hours without activity on it, and signing out ends your session on that device only. To delete your account, email hello@steprank.dance from the address you signed up with.
Everyone who visits
We use no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Our host records your IP address and browser details in its server logs, as every website host does.
To stop someone guessing sign-up codes or flooding our forms, we keep a scrambled copy of your IP address when you use them. It is locked with a secret key, so it cannot be turned back into your address, and it is removed after about a day. Our legal basis for this, and for our backups, is our legitimate interest in keeping StepRank safe and working.
If you use the contact form, your email address and message come to us by email. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track you across websites and do not sell or share your data for advertising, so there is nothing for these browser signals to turn off. We treat every visitor as if they had sent them.
What we save in your browser
Each of these makes the app work or remembers a choice you made. None of them track you, which is why there is no cookie banner.

Your choices and rights
You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, limit how we use it, object to how we use it, or send you a copy. You can withdraw your agreement to having your name shown at any time: your name is then replaced with an anonymous label, and your scores stay so that other dancers’ results remain correct.
If you are in the EU or UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights too.
Email hello@steprank.dance. We answer within 30 days. Dancers and judges do not have accounts, so tell us the competition and your name or bib number, and we may check with the organizer that the request is yours.
Children and young dancers
StepRank is made for adult dance events, not for children, and never asks anyone’s age.
Dancers under 13 do not sign themselves up. The organizer adds them at the registration desk, with a parent or guardian present, using a first name and last initial only. Events in a youth division (such as Juniors) have no self sign-up at all: the organizer adds every dancer.
Dancers aged 13 to 15 can sign themselves up, but a parent or guardian must agree first. The sign-up box says so.
If we learn that a child under 13 signed up on their own, we remove their name. If you are a parent or guardian, email hello@steprank.dance or ask the organizer.
How we protect it
All traffic is encrypted. Database rules limit who can read each piece of data. Codes are stored scrambled. Backups are encrypted with a key only we hold.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the date at the top changes and the list below records what changed. We email organizers before a change that affects them.
